Home Health Owner Uses Security Tech Company to Bridge Care Gap

In efforts to bridge the gap between in-home care and technology-driven security solutions, a California entrepreneur is supplementing his home health franchise with a proprietary tech company specializing in security systems.

Justin Johnston, 32, recently opened Home Helpers & Direct Link of Walnut Creek in California. Founded in 1997, Cincinnati-based Home Helpers is a national franchise specializing in home health care for seniors, new mothers and individuals who need rehabilitative and continuing assistance.

Direct Link is the company’s propriety line of 24/7 medical alert systems, including fall sensors, automated medication dispensers and vital signs monitoring systems.

But Johnson is taking the business further by supplementing his Home Helpers franchise with his own technology company, Twilight Solutions, a company that specializes technological security solutions.

The decision to supplement the Home Helpers franchise with his tech company derived from Johnston’s firsthand experiences caring for his father, who would occasionally wander out of the house.

“When I was providing direct care to my terminally ill father, I felt he would have been better served with an option of home care and assistive technology—someone who could possibly assist during crucial hours of the day along with technology solutions that could supplement with monitoring,” he said.

Along with the traditional in-home care services Home Helpers provide, such as companionship, personal hygiene, medication and care management, the company will also be able to provide home security systems specially designed for seniors and those needing in-home care.

“We can create a plan that fits exactly what a person or a family is looking for, especially with the customizable combination of home care and assisted technology,” Johnston said. “And as a person’s needs change, which they will, we’ll be there.”
