A Minnesota woman pleaded guilty this week to counts of home health care fraud and wire fraud after allegedly embezzling more than $800,000 from a Minneapolis-area home health care company. According to the allegations, Lori Jo Mueller embezzled the funds from Edelweiss Home Health Care and used them for her personal use.
Having worked as vice president of operations, Mueller, of Apple Valley, admitted to having used her corporate checking account to issue payments to herself in an amount totaling $840,000. In the process, she submitted claims to insurers, seeking reimbursement for services provided by the agency’s staff, according to the Department of Justice. In addition to submitting claims to insurers, she simultaneously billed Medicaid for the reimbursements resulting in a double payment to Edelweiss.
Mueller will face a potential maximum sentence of 30 years in prison for the wire fraud and ten years for the health care fraud.
A sentencing hearing is yet to be scheduled.
